Cree Birth Project

Cree Birth is a research partnership between the University of Winnipeg, Nanaandawewigamig (First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba) and Wiiji'idiwag Ikwewag Inc.

The all Indigenous (Neheweyak, Anishinabe, and Metis) multidisciplinary team is working with the Knowledge Keepers to define nation-based indicators of wellness. The nation-based indicators will be used to collect data on the impact on babies that have a culturally trained birth helper support the family during pregnancy and birth.

  • Defining what it is for ourselves, what makes us well, really strength-based indicators of well being and shifting the focus of research away from a deficit approach.
